Distinguished and Famous people from Rockingham

🎬 Sam Worthington

Sam Worthington grew up at Rockingham before drama study at John Curtin school in Fremantle and the National Institute of Dramatic Art. A period as a bricklayer’s apprentice preceded the acting career that eventually brought Avatar and international recognition. In recalling his childhood, he said a major Hollywood film had seemed far beyond anything he expected. The local beginning makes that progression concrete: schooling, work and training came before the giant screens and elaborate digital worlds. His career also included Australian theatre, television and films, rather than beginning with the blockbuster that made him globally familiar.

🚴 Conor Leahy

Conor Leahy’s cycling began with a bargain: rides with his father included stops for coffee and cake. Enjoyment developed into racing and training with Peel District Cycling Club, where Olympic champion Peter Dawson recognised his potential. By Paris in 2024, Leahy was part of Australia’s gold-medal-winning team pursuit squad. Rockingham council formally acknowledged him and fellow rider Oliver Bleddyn as local residents after the victory. The childhood refreshment stops give an appealingly ordinary beginning to an exacting sporting career. On the track, success required four riders to combine speed, timing and endurance rather more precisely than a family café outing.
